Site Description
Rocky shore including Bucket Rocks, Ladies Skerrs and Sharper's Head. The site has many algal ‘diversity hotspots’ and includes nationally rare species. It has a long history of algal study and is the type locality for several species of algae including, Acrochaetiumbattersianum G. Hamel, Phyllophora traillii Holmes ex Batters, Porphyrodiscus simulans Batters and Lithophyllum crouanii Foslie (Brodie et al., 2007, full reference below) Shade tolerant algae are found near the entrances of sea caves. Brown algae grow near the entrance of upper shore caves that are sheltered from wave action. Shade tolerant red and green algae grow further inside the caves (Samuel Byford in Consultation document).
